My Name is Brooke D.

My name is Brooke D and I am a recovering Heroin and Crack addict. I am 22 years old from Bay Shore, NY and am celebrating nine months clean on Febuary 17th, 2016.

Addiction is not an unfamiliar word in my family, being other family members have also suffered from this fatal disease. Fortunately, I was able to turn my life around at such a young age and important time of my life.

I have been abusing drugs and alcohol since the early age of 13. I entered my first outatient treatment at the age of 17 for opiates and alcohol. My story includes relapse, overdoses and homelessness- but without those struggles I would not be who I am today.

Active addiction stole much more than material things from me. I lost my family, my true friends, but most importantly; I lost myself. Drugs and alcohol completely stripped me of my self worth and self esteem, making me believe that I deserved to be homeless with a needle in my arm.

I truely thought that I would not be able to live without heroin and crack. After numerous failed attempts of geographical changes and treatment centers/sober living, I knew I had to do something different.

I entered Harmony House on June 18th, 2015, directly following a 28 day program. As soon as I walked in, I was welcomed with a calm, comforting environment. I was around other females who all shared the same goal as me; to maintain sobriety and get our lives back on track.
My experience at Harmony House has been nothing but amazing. I was taught how to slowly but surely get back into being a productive member of society.

Nine months ago I would never imagine the life I live today. I was a shell of a person who was on the fast track to death. Today I am a responsible young adult with morals and dignity. Thank you Harmony House!
